Electrical tape (also known as insulating or insulation tape) is one of the most versatile and commonly used tools in the electrical industry. But what exactly is it and how should it be used? In this article we will see what it is, what are its main benefits and how to use it properly.

What is electrical tape?

Electrical tape is a type of pressure-sensitive adhesive tape used to insulate electrical wires and other materials that conduct electricity. It is usually made from polyvinyl chloride (PVC) or other plastic materials. When fitted properly, electric tape provides strong and durable adhesion.

Electrical tape is available in a variety of sizes, colours, and thicknesses. Different types of electrical tape are tailored to specific applications. For example, there is heat-resistant tape that can be used in high-temperature applications. PVC tape resists metal corrosion and abrasion, making it ideal to wrap exposed wires. Mastic electrical tape has a thick rubber isolation that provides good resistance to moisture.

Electrical tape is available in different colours. Each colour represents a certain voltage level and usage designation. For example, red electrical tape is typically used for low voltage wires, while green tape is used for ground wires. You can find a complete guide to electrical tape colours here.

What are the benefits of using electrical tape?

Electrical tape provides a variety of benefits:

  • It can be used to insulate electrical wires. Insulation prevents shorts and fire hazards. It also protects against electrical shock.
  • It can be used to secure loose wires. This will prevent them from moving around or coming into contact with other objects.
  • It can be used to repair damaged insulation on electrical wires.
  • It can be used to colour-code wires for easy identification.

Like every tool, electrical tape has its drawbacks. For instance, it can be difficult to remove once it has been applied. It may also not adhere well to certain surfaces, such as plastic or glass.

How to use electrical tape

To use electrical tape in the most effective way, it’s important to know how to apply it. Electrical tape should be wrapped around the material that needs to be insulated, making sure to overlap the edges of the tape. Carefully stretch the tape while wrapping, so that it better conforms to the surface. Wrap the tape snugly, but not too tightly. This will ensure a good connection and prevent it from coming loose.

To improve adhesion, always make sure surfaces are clean and dry before applying electrical tape. When wrapping a wire, continue until the tape is thicker than the wire’s insulation. Trim off any excess tape with a pair of scissors or a sharp knife.
