Electrical wiring colours in the UK

Published date: 21 June 2023

Back to Article Listing coloured electrical wires

When it comes to electrical wiring in the United Kingdom, understanding the colours used for different wires is crucial for safety and compliance. The UK follows a specific colour coding system for electrical installations, which helps electricians and homeowners identify and differentiate between various wires. In this guide, we will delve into the electrical wiring colours used in the UK, providing you with a comprehensive understanding of their meanings.

Understanding the colour coding system

In the UK, electrical wiring colours are standardised to ensure consistency and safety. The colour coding system has undergone changes over the years, to align with European regulations and improve safety standards. Currently, the system uses three colours: brown, blue, and green/yellow. These colours are assigned to specific wires based on their functions.

  • Live wire: Brown
The live wire, responsible for carrying the electrical current, is coloured brown. A live wire not connected to earth or neutral wires poses a risk of electrocution. You should always disconnect the power source from the live wire before working on the wiring.
  • Neutral wire: Blue
The neutral wire, which completes the electrical circuit and carries the electricity away from the appliance, is coloured blue. It is improbable that a blue wire will cause an electric shock upon contact. Nevertheless, be careful as the wire has the potential to run at high temperatures.
  • Earth wire: Green and Yellow
The earth wire, which provides a protective connection to the ground, is essential for safety. In the UK, it is coloured green/yellow. This wire protects against electric shocks by providing a path for the current to safely discharge into the ground in the event of a fault.

Single-phase and three-phase electrical systems

The UK electrical wiring colour code is used in both single-phase and three-phase electrical installations. Single-phase is the most common system and is used in domestic settings. It supplies a voltage of about 240V. Three-phase systems supply a higher voltage of 415V, making them common in industrial buildings.

  • Single-phase systems include three wires (live, earth and neutral).
  • Three-phase systems include four or five wires (three lives and earth; or three lives, earth and neutral).

In current three-phase systems, the live wires are coloured brownblack and grey.

Older electrical wiring colour code

In 2006, the UK introduced changes to the colour coding system to harmonise with European standards. This alteration was made to align the UK’s electrical wiring colours with those used in other European countries, facilitating consistency and promoting international compatibility.

Before the standardisation of wiring colours, an older colour coding system was prevalent in the UK. Under this system, the live wire was red, the neutral wire was black, and the earth wire was green. It is important to note that this old colour coding system is no longer used for new installations, but it may still be encountered in older properties.

Understanding the electrical wiring colours used in the UK is vital for anyone involved in electrical installations or maintenance. The standardised colour coding system of brown for live wires, blue for neutral wires, and green/yellow for earth wires ensures safety and enables efficient identification of different wiring functions. By adhering to these guidelines, both electricians and homeowners can ensure compliance with regulations and promote electrical safety in the UK.
