Encapsulants

Encapsulants are used to protect circuit board components from damage. A variety of materials can be used as encapsulants, including polyurethane resins, silicones and epoxies. Encapsulation materials can be applied to the surface of a circuit board or component, or they can be used to fully enclose them. This process is also known as potting or casting.

ConRo Electronics offers a wide choice of encapsulants from major manufacturers such as Henkel Loctite.

Conro Electronics is an authorized distributor for Henkel Loctite.

Types of encapsulants

There are many different types of encapsulation materials available, each with their own unique set of properties and benefits. It is important to consider the specific needs of your application in order to choose the material that will best meet those needs.

Some of the most common types of encapsulants include:

  • Epoxy resins. Widely used as encapsulants due to their excellent mechanical and electrical properties. They are also resistant to a wide range of chemicals and temperatures.
  • Silicone resins. These resins offer superior flexibility and resistance to high temperatures.
  • Polyurethane resins. These resins provide a balance of mechanical and electrical properties, making them suitable for a wide range of applications.

Benefits of using encapsulants

Protecting circuit boards is essential to ensuring their longevity and efficacy. Encapsulation materials are effective at shielding PCBs from physical damage. This is especially important if the boards are going to be used in an environment where they may be subject to shock or vibration. In addition, encapsulants can protect PCBs from a number of environmental factors. These include moisture, dust, chemicals, and extreme temperatures.

Using encapsulants can also improve circuit board performance. This is because encapsulation reduces electromagnetic interference (EMI), which can interfere with the proper functioning of electronic components. Finally, using encapsulation materials also leads to reduced costs. This is because they can help to prolong the life of PCBs, reducing the need for frequent replacements.
