What is a Conformal Coating?

Published date: 01 February 2021

Back to Article Listing

Conformal coating is a 25-75μm thick (50μm typical) protective coating or polymer film that ‘conforms’ to the topology of circuit boards.

The goal is to protect electronic circuits from harsh conditions where high humidity, several airborne pollutants, and variable temperatures can be present.

It preserves long-term surface insulation resistance (SIR) standards by being electrically insulated and thus guarantees the assembly’s operational integrity.

It also creates a shield from the operating environment to air-borne pollutants, such as salt-spray, while reducing corrosion.

Conformal coatings are a breathable protective layer that, by filtering out airborne pollutants and preserving long-term surface insulation resistance, protects against the specific environment to which the PCA is exposed, but also enables any moisture trapped in the circuit board to escape.

The idea of a conformal electronics coating was originally proposed and created to meet the challenging requirements of the military decades earlier through research.

HumiSeal was part of this early research and has been a visionary and leader for over 60 years as today’s technology has spread to many industries, including:

What Are The Advantages Of Using A Conformal Coating?

It can help to eliminate the need for complex, sophisticated enclosures.

  • Defense from moisture, chemical and physical attacks
  • To guard against thermal differences and shocks
  • Defense against mechanical shocks and vibration
