Types of Conformal Coating

There are five different types of conformal coatings and four different ways to apply them. Hand or spray booth spraying is possible for all coatings.

Some coatings can be applied by hand with a brushing technique, although this takes a skilled touch. Dipping is a common application method that can be done by hand or by machine, but it’s only for slow-curing chemicals.

Finally, if you have the necessary equipment or utilise a conformal coating firm, a robotic coating can be used for any coatings with suitable tooling.

Main types of Conformal Coatings

Acrylic Resins (AR)

Key features:

  • The finish is smooth and lustrous.
  • Excellent for long-term moisture resistance.
  • Temperature range is up to 125 Celsius.
  • Typically applied by brushing, spraying, or dipping manually or by machine.

Advantages:

  • Affordable
  • Easily applied & removed
  • Easy reword & repair

Epoxy Resins (ER)

Key features:

  • Surface is smooth and firm.
  • Excellent resistance to moisture, temperature, and abrasion.
  • It is resistant to chipping, peeling, and cracking.
  • Temperature range is up to 150 Celsius.
  • Typically applied by brushing, spraying, or dipping manually or by machine.

Advantages:

  • Great abrasion & moisture resistance
  • Great chemical resistance
  • Good humidity resistance
  • Excellent in harsh environments

Silicone Resins (SR)

Key features:

  • It becomes elastic and stretchy after curing.
  • Excellent resistance to dampness, corrosion, and extremely high temperatures.
  • Temperature range is up to 200 Celsius.
  • Typically applied by hand or machine brushing, spraying, or dipping

Advantages:

  • Great in extreme temperatures
  • Great humidity and corrosion resistance
  • Good chemical resistance
  • Great PCB adhesion

Polyurethane Resins (UR)

Key features:

  • PCB has a uniform profile that might be thick or thin.
  • FDA-approved for medicinal applications
  • Urethane has great chemical resistance and is ideal for applications that require protection from long-term chemical exposure.
  • Temperature range is up to 125 Celsius.
  • Typically applied by brushing, spraying, or dipping manually or by machine.

Advantages:

  • Great chemical resistance
  • Good humidity resistance
  • Resistance to mechanical issues

Parylene (XY)

Key features:

  • PCB has a uniform profile that might be thick or thin.
  • Low thermal expansion, excellent abrasion resistance, and chemical resistance.
  • FDA-approved for medicinal applications
  • Temperature range is up to 125 Celsius.
  • Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD) machine was used.

Advantages:

  • Excellent temperature resistance
  • High dielectric strength
  • No curing time
  • Transparent and colorless
