What is the ISO 9001 certification?

Published date: 22 June 2022

Back to Article Listing ISO 9001 Certification

ISO 9001 is an international standard that specifies requirements for Quality Management Systems (QMS). It is the most popular standard in the ISO 9000 series. It is also the only standard in the series that requires certification. It is published by the International Organisation for Standardization (ISO).

ISO 9001 offers solutions and best practices for almost all types of technology and business. It can certify any organisation (services or manufacturing), of any size. ISO 9001 helps organisations to systemise processes, improve their efficiency and improve themselves. This is achieved through compliance with specific requirements.

About the ISO 9001 certification

ISO 9001 is based on the plan-do-check-act methodology. It is a process-oriented approach, meant to document and review the structure, responsibilities, and procedures of an organisation. Its objective is to achieve effective quality management.

Specific sections of ISO 9001 contain information on many topics, such as:

  • Requirements for a QMS. This includes documented information, planning and determining process interactions.
  • Responsibilities of management.
  • Resource management. This includes human resources and work environment.
  • Product realisation, from ideation to delivery.
  • Measurement, analysis, and improvement of the QMS.

The current version of ISO 9001 was published in September 2015. This revision includes a greater emphasis on risk-based thinking and increased leadership requirements. ISO 9001:2015 is also more compatible with other management systems.

Why is it important?

Being certified to ISO 9001 is an affirmation of quality. It means that an organisation follows specific guidelines and requirements and strives to continuously improve itself. Most importantly, it means that the organisation prioritises customer satisfaction.

Strong quality control is central to successful business. Potential customers must be confident that the goods or services on offer meet (or exceed) expected standards. It is a quick and easy way to ensure that.

ISO 9001 offers several key benefits to an organisation. These include:

  • Increased profit potential. The reputation of ISO 9001 can help achieve more contracts. It can also increase customer satisfaction and retention.
  • Improved brand image and credibility. When organisations are looking for new suppliers, it is often required to have a QMS based on ISO 9001.
  • Improved customer satisfaction. Quality control leads to understanding customer needs and reduction of errors.
  • Higher efficiency. Following best practices and standardised processes leads to reduced costs.
  • Reduction of manual work. Achieved through process integration and automation.
  • Greater employee engagement. Involving employees in designing process improvements makes them happier and more productive.
  • Improved decision-making. Achieved through best practices, data and evidence collection.
