How long does loctite take to dry?

Published date: 27 April 2022

Back to Article Listing applying adhesive

Loctite products provide outstanding bonding properties. However, they need a certain amount of time to dry. Actually, Loctite threadlockers and retaining compounds do not dry: they cure in the absence of air. This is why they are called anaerobic adhesives. Curing starts when the product is confined between close-fitting metal surfaces. Any excess adhesive outside the assembly, exposed to air, will not cure.

Loctite cyanoacrylate adhesive (also known as super glue), on the other hand, dries when exposed to air. The glue reacts to the presence of moisture in the atmosphere. This provides an exceptionally fast curing time. The greater the moisture content, the quicker the cure.

How long does a Loctite threadlocker or retaining compound take to dry?

Most Loctite threadlockers and retaining compounds will set in 10-20 minutes. It will take them 24 hours to dry into a hardened plastic. This process is called curing.

Curing performance is influenced by several factors:

  1. Loctite products work on both active metals (e.g. brass, copper) and passive substrates, such as stainless steel. However, fixture time is longer for passive substrates.
  2. Higher temperatures improve curing time. Cold temperatures slow it down. Full cure is attainable in 24 hours at room temperature, 22°C.
  3. Using activator. Applying an activator to the fastener will improve cure speed. This is especially useful on inactive metal, or where large gaps are present. Loctite SF 7471 is an excellent choice for all anaerobic products.

We also recommend applying a thin layer of threadlocker. Over-application of product will increase the curing time. Clamping the bonding surfaces and pressing them together tightly will also improve curing. This process will force all the air out of the bonding area, making the adhesive dry faster.

How long does Loctite super glue take to dry?

Loctite cyanoacrylate adhesive will dry and set in a few seconds after application. The glue will achieve full bond strength in 10 minutes. The curing process will be complete in 24 hours.

Drying speed is influenced by several factors:

  1. Air moisture. Super glue cures by reacting to the presence of moisture in the air. Ideal relative humidity (RH) ranges between 30-70%. The bonding area should be exposed to air until curing is complete.
  2. Loctite super glue will bond most surfaces. However, it might be difficult to glue plastic because of its smooth texture and low porosity. Cyanoacrylate adhesives designed for plastic and other difficult-to-bond surfaces will solve this problem.
  3. Super glue is very sensitive to temperature. It will dry quickly if exposed to moderate heat, such as the one provided by a hairdryer.
  4. Using activator and/or primer. Applying activator will promote adhesion, especially on low-energy surfaces. A primer is a different type of adhesion promoter. It evens out pores and irregularities and creates a larger bonding surface. This leads to faster drying and a stronger bond.
